In the fifth part of our 20-programme radio series – Ilm-e-Shayri, Mehr-e-Alam Khan starts with a brief summing-up of the last four parts of the series. Recapitulating the two two-letter words known as Asbāb, plural of Sabab, including Sabab-e-Khafīf and Sabab-e-Saqīl, used in ‘Arooz (Urdu Prosody), he explains the three Awtād (plural of Watad) – three-letter words used in ‘Arooz.
Watad-e-Majmoo’ – the first Watad – is a three-letter word, the first two letters of which being Mutaharrik, bearing a Harakat (movement) i.e. one of the three diacritics – Zabar, Zair or Páish – on them, and the third letter being Sākin i.e. having no movement but a diacritic Jazm denoting quiescence/ rest/ pause.
The second Watad is Watad-e-Mafrooq that is a three-letter word, the first and the last (third) letter of which are Mutaharrik (bearing a Harakat) and the middle (second) one remains Sākin.
A third Watad has also been mentioned as Watad-e-Mauqoof – a three-letter word, the first letter of which is Mutaharrik and the second- and the third letter are Sākin.
Another term Fāsla-e-Sughra has been defined as a four-letter word, in which the first three letters are Mutaharrik and the fourth letter is Sākin.

Ilm-e-Shayri ( علمِ شاعری इल्म–ए–शायरी ) is the first-ever radio series of programmes, based on the art and skills involved in writing Urdu poetry. The series, consisting of 20 radio programmes of more than 15 minutes’ duration each, answers some of the basic questions about the art of Urdu poetry.
Ilm-e-Shayri describes various patterns of rhythms and sounds in Urdu poetry, the study of which falls under Ilm-e-‘Arooz (Urdu Prosody). Based on a conversation between Mehr-e-Alam Khan, an Urdu poetry enthusiast and journalist, and Pervaiz Alam, Cine Ink, the series Ilm-e-Shayri gives a vivid description of various Bahrs(meters) used to write Urdu poetry, their popular forms, and specific patterns of arkaan(feet) that form a bahr as well as the origin and development of ‘Arooz.
The series, discussing Zehaafaat (catalexis), any irregular changes in Bahr (meter), describes popular catalectic forms of various Bahrs. It also offers important principles for Taqtee’ (scansion) i.e. examining the metrical feet (arkaan) of a verse (she’r).
The series includes a brief account of various forms of Urdu poetry, and important tips for writing poetry. It also provides answers to various queries you might have about writing Urdu poetry, as we go along.

‘इल्म–ए–शायरी‘ उर्दू में शेर और ग़ज़ल लिखने की कला और उसके शिल्प का एक अनोखा रेडियो कार्यक्रम है। लगभग पंद्रह–बीस मिनट की बीस कड़ियों की यह कार्यक्रम शृंखला उर्दू में शेर और ग़ज़ल कहने की कला से जुड़े बहुत से सवालों का जवाब देगी।
इस कार्यक्रम में उर्दू शायरी की अलग-अलग ध्वनियों और लय की जानकारी है जिसे उर्दू शायरी में ‘इल्म-ए-अरूज़’ कहा जाता है। हिंदी कविता के संदर्भ में इसे छंद शास्त्र कहा जाता है। यानी, जिस तरह हिंदी की छंदबद्ध कविता, दोहा, सोरठा, रोला, चौपाई या कुंडलिया जैसे अनेक छंदों में बंधी रही है, उसी तरह उर्दू शायरी अलग अलग बहरों में बंधी है। बहर को हिंदी में छंद और अंग्रेज़ी में मीटर कहा जा सकता है।
बहर क्या है, कितनी तरह की बहरें होती हैं, एक बहर दूसरी बहर से कैसे अलग है, सबसे ज़्यादा इस्तेमाल होने वाली बहरें कौन सी हैं, किसी एक बहर को निर्धारित करने वाले चरण यानी अरकान क्या हैं, बहर में ध्वनि, लय, गति वग़ैरह क्या भूमिका निभाते हैं, रदीफ़ और क़ाफ़िया किसे कहते हैं, इन तमाम सवालों के जवाब देने वाले इल्म-ए-अरूज़ की शुरूआत कब और कैसे हुई- यह सारी जानकारी इस रेडियो शृंखला में शामिल है जो उर्दू शायरी की कला और तकनीक में गहरी रुचि रखने वाले पत्रकार महरे आलम और सिनेइंक के परवेज़ आलम की बातचीत पर आधारित है।
