In this ninth part of our 20-programme radio series, Ilm-e-Shayri, Mehr-e-Alam Khan begins with a description of the three Arkān (metrical feet) derived from the Dāyra (Circle) Dāyra-e-Mafrooqa. These three Arkān are a combination of three syllables including one Watad Mafrooq – three-letter word of which the first and the third letters are Mutaharrik having a Harakat (movement) i.e. Zabar, Záir or Páish, and the middle letter being Sākin (Quiescent); and two Asbāb-e-Khafīf – two-letter words of which the first is Mutaharrik and the second is Sākin. The three Arkān originating from Dāyra-e-Mafrooqa are: Fā’i-lā-tun, Mus-taf’ī-lun, and Maf-‘oo-lātu.

The third Dāyra is Dāyra-e-Motalifa that gives two Mufrad Bahoor (Single Metres) –  Bahr-e-Wāfir and  Bahr-e-Kāmil. Each of the two basic Arkān of these two Bahoor (Metres) is a combination of a Watad Majmoo’ – three-letter word of which the first two letters bear a Harakat on them and the third letter is Sākin; and a Fāsla-e-Sughrā –  four-letter word that carries a Harakat on the first three letters and the fourth letter of which is Sākin. The basic Rukn (metrical foot) of Bahr-e-Wāfir is Mufā-‘ila-tun and that of Bahr-e-Kāmil is Muta-fā-‘ilun.

The fourth Dāyra is Dāyra-e-Muttafiqa that gives two other Mufrad Bahoor – Bahr-e-Mutaqārib and Bahr-e-Mutadārik. The basic Arkān of  these two Bahoor comprise a  Watad Majmoo’ and a Sabab Khafif – two-letter word of which the first letter carries a Harakat and the second is Sākin.  The basic Rukn (metrical foot) of Bahr-e-Mutaqārib is Fa’oo-lun and that of Bahr-e-Mutadārik is Fā-‘ilun repeated four times in a Misra’ (Hemistich) and eight times in a She’r (Couplet/ Distich) to give a Sālim Musamman Bahr (perfect eight-feet metre).

In the previous two parts three other Mufrad Bahoor have been described. The sixth part carries a description of Bahr-e-Hazaj (the basic Rukn of which is Mufā-‘ī-lun), and Bahr-e-Ramal (the basic Rukn of which is Fā-‘ilā-tun). The seventh part covers  Bahr-e-Rajaz (the basic Rukn of which ies Mus-taf-‘ilun). Bahr-e-Hazaj, Bahr-e-Ramal and Bahr-e-Rajaz all three owe their origin to Dāyra-e-Mujtaliba.

In this ninth part of Ilm-e-Shayri, Nasser Harvani recites a ghazal by Salman Akhtar:

Ye Dil Hai Iska Darwaza Dheere Dheera Khulta Hai

Dastak Dekar Thoda Rukna Fauran Laut Na Jaana Tum
