In the tenth part of our 20-programme radio series, ILM-E-SHAYRI, Mehr-e-Alam Khan recaps the three Dawāir/ Dāyráy (Circles), described in the last three parts of this series, from which the seven Mufrad Bahoor (Single Metres) are derived.

Besides, he mentions the eight basic Arkān  (Feet) used to illustrate various Bahoor (Metres). These Arkān are Mufā-‘ī-lun, Fā-‘ilā-tun or Fā’i-lā-tun, Mus-taf-‘ilun or Mus-taf’i-lun, Mufā-‘ila-tun, Muta-fā-‘ilun, Fa’oo-lun, Fā-‘ilun and Maf-‘oo-lātu. He also touches upon the two Samānī Dawāir/Dāyráy (Eight-letter Circles) of Sālim Bahoor (Perfect/ unaltered metres).

In this tenth part of ILM-E-SHAYRI, Mehr-e-Alam introduces  the twelve Murakkab Bahoor (Composite/Compound Metres) used in Urdu poetry. These 12 Bahoor are obtained from two Dawāir/ Dāyráy (Circles) – Dāyra-e-Mukhtalifa and Dāyra-e-Mushtaba.

From Dāyra-e-Mukhtalifa five Murakkab Bahoor are obtained by the repetition of Fa-‘ool-un, Mufā-‘ī-lun. Of them, three are used in Urdu poetry including Bahr-e-Tawīl, Bahr-e-Madīd, and Bahr-e-Basīt.

Dāyra-e-Mushtaba gives nine Murakkab Bahoor in Musaddas form – having three Arkān in each Misra’ (Hemistich) of a She’r (Couplet/Distich). These Bahoor, obtained by the rotation of the elements of Mus-taf-‘ilun, Mus-taf-‘ilun, Maf-‘oo-lātu include Bahr-e-Sarī’, Bahr-e-Jadīd, Bahr-e-Qarīb, Bahr-e-Munsarah, Bahr-e-Khafīf, Bahr-e-Muzārè’, Bahr-e-Muqtazib, Bahr-e-Mujtas, and Bahr-e-Mashākil.

In this 10th episode, Mamta Gupta recites Shah Niaz Ahmed Barelvi’s ghazal:

aish-o-nishāt-e-zindagī chhoḌ diyā jo ho so ho
