Meet Gazal Dhaliwal, an upcoming Bollywood scriptwriter, whose latest script for a short film ‘A Monsoon Date’ (2019), has awakened interest in the lives of transgenders.

Gazal herself is a trans-woman.

The film directed by Tanuja Chandra, featuring Konkona Sen Sharma, was screened at various festivals including the LGBTQ, Rainbow Literary Festival in New Delhi, received rave reviews.

The film ‘A Monsoon Date’ tells the story of a young woman on an eventful rainy evening. As she takes a journey to see the man she is dating, her own identity leads to bittersweet moments.

Gazal’s screenwriting includes Lipstick Under My Burkha, Qarib Qarib Single and Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga.

Gazal Dhaliwal grew up in the city of Patiala in Punjab, and was born in a Sikh family.

She studied for Chemical Engineering degree and later worked for Infosys as a software engineer before joining the film industry.

Earlier, she spent three years undergoing sex reassignment and finally had the surgery in 2007.
