After playing a long innings of about 40 years at the BBC, Shafi Naqi Jamie, one of the most popular broadcasters of BBC Hindi and Urdu languages, retired in April 2019. In conversation with Pervaiz ALam, he shares some of the most interesting and intimate details of his career as a broadcaster.

In his inimitable style, tongue-in-cheek, he narrates what happened when he interviewed the former military ruler of Pakistan, Parvez Musharraf, but refused to shake hands with him. How come, once, he ended up interviewing Gen Musharraf’s father, who revealed too many personal details, much to the embarrassment of General’s family. And, of course, his interactions with Asif Zardari, former President of Pakistan, who was his contemporary during the Karachi days as a student, also feature during the course of the conversation.

“Media is not independent in Pakistan. It’s fully controlled,” Shafi Jamie says while discussing freedom of speech in Pakistan. He says “CCC controls media in Pakistan – Colonel Control Committee.”
