One of Hindi’s best known novelists and writers, Mridula Garg (born 25 October 1938) remembers the day when the Delhi police came with a warrant to arrest her for writing ‘obscenity’ in her acclaimed novel Chittcobra, published in 1979. She remembers vividly and very kindly how renowned lawyer LM Singhvi and famous Hindi writer Jainendra Jain stood by her for writing Chittcobra. They both defended her publicly and saved from a court case.

But Mridula Garg has harsh words reserved for the Hindi fraternity as many of them did not come to her defence at the time when she needed them most as a fellow writer. In fact, they punished and persecuted her, says Mridula Garg. She names and shames some of the Hindi giants of her time in a conversation with Achala Sharma, former Head of the BBC Hindi Service.

The interview was recorded at her residence in Delhi on 2 February 2019. Mridula Garg has also recorded one of her Hindi stories in her voice for Cine Ink which will be presented as a part of Cine Ink’s Hindi Utsav 2019.

Mridula Garg, based in Delhi, won Sahitya Academy Award for her Hindi Hindi Miljul Mann. She has published more than 30 books of her novels, short stories, plays and collections of essays.
