This is as good as it gets. In the 20th and final programme of Ilm-e-Shayri, legendary ghazal singer, Ustad Ghulam Ali Khan, reveals how he composed some of his most popular ghazals such as ‘Chup hain deewar ki tarah saaye’, ‘Apni dhun mein rehta hoon’ and ‘Kathin hai raahguzar thodi door saath chalo’.

Ghulam Ali says, he always looks at the ‘Bahr’ (metre) and mood of the ghazal before choosing a raga for its composition. The words ending with a consonant alphabet pose a serious challenge to a singer, that’s why, he suggests, such words have to be sung with utmost care. In this context, Ghulam Ali recites his composition; HairatoN ke silsile soz-e-nihaaN tak aa gaye’ by Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi where the word ‘Tak’ requires special attention. Mirza Ghalib’s ghazal ‘Dil hi to hai na sang o khisht’ is another example where ‘Khisht’ is the trickiest word to sing, he discusses.

The grand finale of Ilm-e-Shayri, besides, featuring an excerpt from an old interview with Ghulam Ali by Pervaiz Alam, recaps some of the highlights of the series with Meher e Alam Khan, including a medley of ghazals, sung by Shephali Frost, Mehtab Malhotra, Mamta Gupta and Nasser Harvani.
