In this nineteenth part of the Cine ink’s 20-programme radio series – ILM-E-SHAYRI,
Mehr-e-Alam Khan presents ‘Aroozī Tajziya (prosodic analysis) of nine famous Urdu ghazals that have been sung by renowned singers for films/ albums or in concerts.

These ghazals represent three famous Bahoor (plural of Bahr) or Metres including Bahr-e-Muzār’à, Bahr-e-Mujtas and Bahr-e-Khafīf. The basic Arkān (feet) of Bahr-e-Muzār’à are Mufā-‘ī-lun, Fā-‘i-lātun, Mufā-‘īlun, Fā-‘i-lātun, whereas those of Bahr-e-Mujtas are Mus-taf’i-lun, Fā-‘ilā-tun, Mus-taf’i-lun, Fā-‘ilā-tun. However, Bahr-e-Khafīf’s basic Arkān are Fā-‘ilā-tun, Mus-taf’i-lun, Fā-‘ilā-tun. It should not be out of place to mention that in Urdu poetry the three Bahoor have been used in their Mazāhif (catalectic) forms only and not in their original forms. Mehr-e-Alam Khan is in conversation with Pervaiz Alam.

When any of the Arkān is repeated four times in a Misra’ (hemistich – one line of a couplet) i.e. eight times in a shá’r (couplet), the Bahr (Metre) is known as Musamman Bahr, and when the basic Rukn (foot) is repeated three times in a Misra’ or six times In a shá’r (couplet), the Bahr (Metre) is known as Musaddas.

In this programme, Mehr-e-Alam Khan describes nine famous Mazāhif (catalectic) forms of the three Bahoor (Metres). Based on these catalectic forms, the nine popular ghazals were written by nine famous contemporary and yesteryear Urdu poets including Sāhir Ludhyānvi, Majrooh Sultānpuri, Faiz Ahmad ‘Faiz’, Kaifi A’zmī, Nidā Fāzli, Hasan Kamāl, Mīr Taqī ‘Mīr’, Asad Ullah Khan ‘Ghālib’ and Javed Akhtar.

Giving the Taqtee’ (Scansion) of the Matla’ (the opening couplet) of each of these ghazals, Mehr-e-Alam explains some of the famous Mazahif (catalectic) forms and the resultant Āhang (Melodies) of the three Bahoor (Metres).

Shephali Frost sings selected Ash’ār (couplets) from eight of the nine famous ghazals discussed in this part of the Series.
