In the eleventh part of our 20-programme radio series ILM-E-SHAYRI, Mehr-e-Alam Khan explains, Bahoor (Metres) are not always used in their Sālim (perfect or unaltered) forms but at times some changes or alterations occur in their Arkān (Feet). These alterations in the elements of the basic eight Arkān, used in different Bahoor, are called Zihāfāt (Catalexes), singular of which is Zihāf (Catalexis). Zihāfāt can occur in three ways:  either any part of an element or an element of a Rukn (Foot) is removed; or an addition is made to that (element); or a Mutaharrik (Movant/ a letter carrying a movement of Zabar, Záir or Páish on it) of an element of a Rukn is made Sākin (Quiescent). Zihāfāt are of two types – Mufrad (Single) and Murakkab (Compound). A single change or alteration in a Rukn is called a Mufrad Zihāf, and more than one changes made at at time in a Sālim Rukn are called Murakkab Zihāf.

Further, he describes eight Zihāfāt applied to Asbāb-e-Khafifīf (two-letter words of which the first letter is Mutaharrik and the second is Sākin) of different Sālim Arkān, besides explaining the two specific Zihāfāt – Taskīn and Tahnīq or Takhnīq – which are exclusively applied to the Mazāhif (catalectic forms) of the Arkān. The Mazāhif of Taskīn is called Musakkan and that of Tahnīq or Takhnīq is called Muhannaq or Mukhannaq.

The eight Zihāfāt of Asbāb Khafif discussed in this part are Khabn, Tayye, Qabz, Kaff, Qasr, Hazf, Raf’a and Jad’a or Jaz’a. The Mazāhif (catalectic forms) of these Zihāfāt are known as Makhboon, Mutawwī, Maqbooz, Makfoof, Maqsoor, Mahzoof, Marfoo’ and Majdoo’ or Majzoo’, respectively.

In this episode, Nasser Harvani recites Salman Akhtar’s ghazal:

Kabhi Kabhi Matlab Ke Khaatir Jaan Ke Dhoka Khaana Tum

Achhe Log Bhi Hain Duniya Mein Lekin Bhool Na Jaana Tum
