सच्चिदानंद हीरानंद वात्स्यायन अज्ञेय हिंदी के उन दिग्गज साहित्यकारों में हैं जिनके नाम से नयी कविता और प्रयोगवाद का ज़िक्र शुरू होता है। वे सप्तक, दिनमान और नवभारत टाइम्स के सम्पादक रहे, देश विदेश के विश्वविद्यालयों में अध्यापन का काम किया। हिंदी आलोचना के क्षेत्र में नए क्षितिज तक पहुँचे लेकिन गद्य और पद्य, कहानी और कविता, दोनों में उनका योगदान अद्भुत है।
हिंदी की नयी कविता के वे कीर्तिमान हैं। शरणार्थी शीर्षक के अंतर्गत उनकी कई बहुचर्चित कविताओं को १९४७ में देश के विभाजन पर काव्यात्मक प्रतिक्रिया के रूप में देखा जाता है। देवेश वर्मा से सुनिए अज्ञेय की इन कुछ सर्वश्रेष्ठ कविताओं का पाठ।
Devesh Verma recites Sachchidananda Hirananda Vatsyayan Agyeya’s literary gem, Sharnaarthi- a poetic response to the cataclysm of Partition in 1947. He was travelling across a part of Uttar Pradesh by train at the time; what he witnessed and experienced then had left him profoundly shaken, and he hardly stops short of calling humans the worst among earth’s inhabitants. Sharnaarthi is deeply satirical, and metaphorical poem. For instance, the two snakes crawling side by side are metaphors for communal hatred of the two communities, the kind that given an excuse can erupt like a volcano in no time.
One of the literary giants of Hindi literature, Sachchidananda Hirananda Vatsyayan Agyeya (7 March 1911- 4 April 1987) is considered to be a pioneer in introducing a new wave of hindi poetry. A hugely versatile talent in literature, Agyeya edited India’s top newspapers, wrote acclaimed books and experimented with new styles in Hindi prose as well.

देवेश वर्मा पेशे से पत्रकार रहे हैं और भारत की कई टीवी चैनल्ज़ के साथ काम कर चुके हैं। आजकल उर्दू की शाहकार नज़्मों के पाठ के लिए मशहूर हैं। उर्दू से हिंदी अनुवाद के लिए उन्हें साहित्य अकादमी की ओर से पुरस्कृत भी किया जा चुका है।
Devesh Verma is known for reciting Urdu nazms with perfect diction and pronunciation. He was a TV journalist for over twenty years, associated first with NDTV, then Sahara Media; prior to that he presented Urdu news on Doordarshan. He has been awarded by Sahitya Akadami for his translation from Urdu to Hindi of its award winning book Sakhtiyaat, Pas-Sakhtiyaat aur Mashriqee Sheriyat (Structuralism, Post-Structuralism and Oriental Poetics) which deals primarily with literary theory.
He has also done translations for Sahitya Akadami’s literary journal Samkalin Bharatiya Sahitya and for Bhasha, a Central Hindi Directorate publication. He did his Master’s and M Phil in Urdu from JNU, and while there he would write articles and do interviews for various national Hindi dailies.
